Ghxsts Can't D.I.E.
Behind The Scenes
What If You Heard A Ghxst?
Each fear has a correlation with death. Every time you get scared of something, its because of the underlying factor that you might die. Whether its metaphorically or even physically it still sets off an alarm in your brain that makes you feel uneasy. In "What If You Heard A Ghxst?" the detective has a physical death. Its meant to represent the death of Ghxst's past and the identity he had before starting music. It was the beginning of Ghxst (SZN's stage name at the time). At the time SZN realized he wanted to do music full time at some point but was afraid to take the step forward because he didn't know if he would succeed or not. It wasn't a stable way to make a living and it was completely different to what he had planned his life like before.
Nightmares ft. Nat Haley
Whenever we experience a breakup, some of us don't take the time to grieve and that's something that is shown throughout the track. Nat plays the role of someone coping with then end of the toxic relationship saying, the only way he'll be ok is if he never sees her ever again. But in the midst of him contemplating what went wrong it also comes to realization that he lives in an environment where he must prioritize his own safety. It makes him want to focus on his goals and working towards a better situation, This song is the fear of losing yourself in a relationship that won't work. But ignoring these feelings and pushing through won't always save you.
101
SZN explains that the song is written in the form of a letter to pass down to his future children in case he is ever gone. In the letter he lays down a brief guide to life that he wishes his children to follow. He also expresses his love for them and the lengths he'd take to make sure the family is safe. As a parent it can be scary to not have a last message for your kid in an event where you can't be by their side, and being forgotten can be scary too. You never know whether your words will be lost through time, and if they are... you've died twice.
D.I.E.
D.I.E. continues the story that was interrupted in Nightmares. SZN continues the grievance in a relationship, and battling whether she was really the problem all along. He tries to continue with his life and succeed in his music career but feels as if his pride was the one blinding him. Despite his efforts to forget her he can't help but miss her and the moments they shared. However he comes to a conclusion that it won't be the end of the world. If you spend your life fearing the end, or the death of something you won't be able to properly live through it. A legacy is built from how much you were able to accomplish, and if you keep holding onto the past for safety, time will consume you. Although death is eternal, a legacy is forever.
